Crucial Foundation ARCP deadlines that are fast approaching

Thank you to those who have already returned your spreadsheets, we will shortly start reviewing these and will contact you if we have any questions.

  1. F1 ARCP Tracking Spreadsheet and the F1-F2 TOI Spreadsheet – trusts please return no later than 18th June 2021 
  2. F2 ARCP Tracking Spreadsheet – trust please return no later than 23rd of June 2021 

Returns should be made via the PGMDE Support Portal (PSP).

If these deadlines are missed it can have consequences relating to the GMC Licence or trainees progressing into Speciality training so we must be kept up to date on any delays, you anticipate.

If you have any questions, please contact your relevant officer by calling 020 7866 3216 or raise a ticket via the PGMDE Support Portal (PSP).

 

***Highly Important ARCP***

Trainees must sign their ARCP on Horus.

This does not constitute you accept the outcome or affect your ability to appeal but shows you acknowledge receipt of the outcome.

Furthermore, for Outcome 1 this is a requirement for the school to process the F1CC which is required for the move to Full licence to practice. For Outcome 6 we cannot release your FPCCs without trainees signing their outcome.

 

Merit Awards

The number of merits available per Trust site is determined by the number of trainees:

1-29 per F1 or F2/year = 1 nomination per category for each year

30-59 per F1 or F2/year = 2 nominations per category for each year

Over 60 per F1 or F2/year= 3 nominations per category for each year

Foundation Faculty Groups decide on the exact mechanism for agreeing award recommendations locally. Nominees must have completed all their assessments, be progressing well and be expected to be signed‐off. Trusts may also issue their own awards locally if they wish outside of this process.

Trusts need to return their completed nominations tracker via the Support Portal as an attachment to a ticket by 2nd July 2021:

The categories are as follows:

Foundation e-Portfolio: Foundation Doctors who have demonstrated exceptional engagement with the Horus e-Portfolio system using it to its full potential to manage and promote their educational experience and learning. This includes surpassing the minimum requirements, showing good reflective practice and intelligent curriculum mapping.

Quality improvement: Awarded to trainees who complete an insightful audit which has real effects for their LEP.

Leadership: Foundation Doctors who have taken on an active leadership role amongst their peers and other trust staff, promoting positive team working at the trust. This could include participation in a LEP initiative.

Teaching Excellence: Awarded to trainees who excel at teaching whether informally on the wards or who takes the initiative and, for example, arranges additional formal teaching for their peers at their LEP.

Clinical Excellence: Foundation Doctors who have demonstrated excellence in their clinical practice and actively enhance the patient experience.

Outstanding Contribution: Foundation Faculty Groups may, in exceptional circumstances, nominate an individual for a specified outstanding contribution as well (included in notes section). This could be, for example, for a trainee who writes an F1 guidebook for the LEP.

 

June 2021 update about the Foundation e-learning programme

As you will be aware the Foundation curriculum is changing in August 2021.

We have a new Foundation elearning programme which aligns all elearning sessions with the new 2021 curriculum.

F1 doctors starting in August 2021 and doctors becoming F2 in August 2021 will be enrolled to the new Foundation elearning programme on 30 June 2021. Check your emails for this or notices on the elearning for healthcare Hub. The existing Foundation elearning programme, which aligns with the 2016 curriculum, will be retired on 4 August 2021 and all history of previous sessions completed will be kept in your history on the elearning for healthcare Hub and on your eportfolio.

Remember if you have not already used our elearning, the Foundation elearning programme is an official resource designed specifically to support you in completing the Foundation Curriculum and available free via Health Education England’s (HEE) elearning for healthcare (elfh) Hub. Topics cover the entire Foundation Curriculum and completing sessions early will help you get more out of your attachments in the Foundation years. Each of these sessions are mapped to the Foundation Curriculum and will provide evidence to the General Medical Council that you have completed the Curriculum. The Foundation elearning programme will help you cover parts of the Foundation Curriculum that you would otherwise not encounter. Your sessions will be recorded in your eportfolio.

You can sign on to the elearning with your login supplied by elearning for healthcare at any time during your foundation training:

HORUS and TURAS have direct links to elearning for healthcare sessions from the Foundation Curriculum and therefore accessible to all trainees, making it quick and easy to access the appropriate session linked to the curriculum.

 

SCRIPT – supporting safer prescribing practices

The SCRIPT programme is a collection of innovative elearning portfolios designed to encourage safe and effective prescribing and medicines management among healthcare professionals.

SCRIPT will enhance your knowledge and confidence in prescribing correctly, improving patient safety, therapeutics and medicines management. You will receive a certificate for each module that you complete, which can be used in your online learning portfolio. SCRIPT is easy to use. You can access the modules at a time which suits you and revisit them even after completion. SCRIPT registration for F1 foundation trainees will be available from 8 July 2021. Virtual Instructor Led Learning Faculty

Health Education England’s Technology Enhanced Learning (HEE TEL) team is working on the Virtual Instructor Led Learning (VILL) Faculty which aims to support the education community increase their confidence and capability as they are transitioning to designing, developing and delivering learning virtually.

The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated and amplified the pace for digital transformation and delivering teaching online. VILL is therefore highly likely to become one of the predominant mechanisms for delivering learning within the health and care sector.

The insight gathered during the discovery phase highlighted that there is a whole spectrum of performance ability from people feeling overwhelmed and under-equipped, to early adopters who are stretching the boundaries of this medium. The VILL faculty aims to offer support to everyone regardless of their current ability and experience.

The VILL team can now offer live support to the education community over the next couple of months in three ways:

  2. Virtual Learning Coaching - One-to-One or One-to-Team Virtual Coaching

In order to start the second year of the Foundation Programme (F2) you need to apply for full registration with a licence to practice with the GMC. You should submit your application as early as possible to make sure you have the correct registration in time to start your F2 post.

New UK Foundation Programme Curriculum 2021

The Foundation Programme (FP) curriculum, which underpins the training and professional development of newly graduated doctors, relaunches for the first time in five years this summer.

Key points

The curriculum sets out a holistic approach to care including physical health, mental health and social health and the skills required to manage this in both acute and community settings and for patients with chronic conditions. Foundation doctors must demonstrate that they are competent in the traditional elements of medical training but also in areas such as communication and consultation skills, patient safety and teamwork. The curriculum provides a framework for educational progression that will help them achieve these skills and supports them through the first two years of professional development after graduation from medical school.

High standards of support and the importance of direct observation in the workplace feature strongly in the 2021 curriculum. It has a reduced number of higher-level outcomes and professional capabilities which means it is easier to follow and provides a more streamlined approach.

There are also changes for clinical and educational supervisors, who are required to have a better understanding of equality and diversity issues and have up to date CPD in foundation training.

Near Peer Support

Recommendation 13 of the Foundation Review recommended that all F1s should have the opportunity to have a more senior trainee as a mentor. We have worked with the AoMRC to come up with a suggested scheme called ‘Near-peer support’ although this should not replace an established scheme – rather it is for those who don’t have anything or might like to refine their scheme. Supporting Trainers, Supporting Doctors, Supporting Patients: progress since the postgraduate medical foundation programme review including Foundation Dr Quality Charter

In 2018–2019 the HEE Foundation Programme Review heard evidence from a wide range of stakeholders, including foundation doctors, about the difficulties faced by those entering foundation training from medical school.  Several recommendations were made and this pack outlines progress and contains practical information to assist with implementation.

ARCP requirements for June 2021

Requirements have been adapted for all foundation doctors to reflect the ongoing effects of the pandemic. For more information please visit the UKFPO website by accessing the following link https://foundationprogramme.nhs.uk/curriculum/arcp/.

 

Self-Development Time

Recommendation #14 of the foundation review was to ensure all foundation doctors have time formally included in their work schedules for non-clinical professional activities and that this would be called ‘self-development time’.

From August 2020, all English trusts with foundation doctors were required to include self-development time in the work schedules of foundation year two (FY2) and then if possible for foundation year one (FY1) doctors. FY2 doctors had a minimum of two hours per week self-development time. FY1 doctors also had a minimum of 1 hour although not mandatory.

After evaluating the first year of this scheme listening to feedback from trainees themselves and the system it has been determined that from August 2021 all FY1 and FY2 doctors will have a minimum of 2 hours on average per week of SDT time. The implementation of this has been planned with the wellbeing of doctors in mind, but also with the demands that are being placed upon service provision in mind.

The UK FP Curriculum Delivery Group have developed a helpful one-page information sheet (available on the UKFPO’s Sharing Best Practice page) on the importance of using the PSG to gain robust feedback about all foundation doctors (and specifically not just those who may require additional support).

The PSG is part of the FP Curriculum 2016 and will be a part of the new curriculum as well.

Please make your Foundation Programme Directors (FPDs) and medical education managers aware of this guidance and encourage the use of the PSG feedback tools in the e-portfolios.

Eating Disorders Training for Foundation Doctors and Medical Students

This training was developed in response to the PHSO investigation into avoidable deaths from eating disorders as outlined in recommendations from the report titled Ignoring the Alarms: How NHS Eating Disorder Services Are Failing Patients (PHSO, 2017). It is the result of collaboration between Beat, Health Education England and the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ Faculty of Eating Disorders and is designed to ensure that all medical students and foundation doctors are trained to understand, identify and respond appropriately when faced with a patient with a possible eating disorder. The training can be accessed via the Beat Eating Disorders website.

New Recognising and Managing Deterioration e-learning programme launched

Health Education England e-Learning for Healthcare (HEE e-LfH) has worked in partnership with London South Bank University and Bournemouth University, to develop a new, free e-learning programme to support health and social care professionals working in clinical environments where patients could physically deteriorate.

The Recognising and Managing Deterioration programme is an e-learning resource offered at two levels, universal and advanced, to reflect the participant’s experience and clinical setting. This resource is structured around the ABCDE assessment tool and allows participants to revise their anatomy and physiology, develop their skills and knowledge in the assessment process to recognise deterioration and manage the findings within the scope of their clinical role.

Changes to vital signs, behaviour and mental state often occur before a serious event, such as cardiac arrest. Being able to recognise and act on these changes are essential skills to improving patient safety and outcomes. A range of resources are available in this e-learning programme to support the workforce and organisations in ensuring staff have the necessary knowledge and skills to recognise and manage deterioration in adult patients.
