REMINDER - PSG Guidance

For supervisors, a reminder for you of one of the key differences this year with the 2021 curriculum, the requirement for a ‘satisfactory’ PSG report at least once during the year (just like there is a requirement for a satisfactory TAB).  More information on PSG is given on the curriculum page (topic 5).  If your FD does not have a satisfactory PSG report in their portfolio then the current clinical supervisor will need to organise this on the e-portfolio.  There is no minimum number of respondents and in small departments/practices the PSG report may only involve one person other than the CS but, ideally there should be feedback from three individuals.  When deciding whether the report is satisfactory, the supervisor will need to consider the feedback in the context of the Foundation doctor’s progress.  It is likely that any ‘major concerns’ expressed by the PSG would make the report unsatisfactory; however, minor concerns that have been addressed elsewhere in the portfolio might still allow a PSG report to be considered ‘satisfactory’.  The Horus e-portfolio allows the supervisor to comment in the CSR.

Please find below a helpful PDF guidance document “The importance of the Placement Supervision Group (PSG) feedback tool”

PSG Guidance

Please share this with your trainees, FPDs and local FP faculty.

V-Space for SuppoRTT Trainees 2022

The V-Space Coaching and Support Programme is a series of four group coaching and peer support sessions for doctors returning to training after taking time out. The small groups run for 2.5 hours every fortnight and are led by a senior group coach from the Professional Support Unit’s Coaching Service. Conducted entirely online and in a confidential setting, V-Space aims to create a supportive, confidential and structured learning environment for peer discussion. Each session draws on a range of practical coaching tools for self-reflection, goal-setting, enhanced confidence, stress management and leadership communication.

Sessions combine experiential learning via pair and group activities with insights from guest speakers plus coaching tools and support resources. The overall aim is to assist doctors to return to training with a clear sense of their needs and objectives, as well as the support and resources to achieve these with full confidence and commitment.

V-Space features:

  • Guest speaker slots ‘in conversation with’ trainees who have experienced typical challenges related to returning to training. They will share what they learned and the strategies and approaches they found useful.
  • Small, closed group working together every fortnight over a series of four sessions.
  • WhatsApp group for connecting with peers in between sessions.
  • Tools & resources circulated after each session to support your learning and group engagement.

Eligibility:

Doctors in London and the South East from any specialty, at any stage of training, and who have taken time out of training for reasons of parental leave, medical leave, academic/research purposes or a career break are welcome to apply. We also ask that participants are within a few months of taking time out or due to return to training within a few months of the group start date (see options below).

Spaces are limited to 14 participants per group so please book early to avoid disappointment.

Belfast Eye Conference 2022: Saturday 2nd July and Sunday 3rd July 2022

We are thrilled to announce the second annual virtual Belfast Eye Conference! Hosted by Queen’s University Belfast.

At Belfast Eye Conference, you will meet like-minded healthcare students, early-stage doctors and early career vision scientists from around the world who are equally fascinated by clinical ophthalmology and vision related research.

The conference will provide the stage for speakers who will give broad and varied perspectives on eye related disease. Consultant ophthalmologists will give clinical talks relating to their sub-specialty, and members of the multi-disciplinary team will discuss how they support eye health.

Vision science is a strong and active research field, particularly in Northern Ireland. We are excited to showcase cutting edge vision related research from scientists at Queen’s University Belfast.

Belfast Eye Conference will also provide a platform for delegates - you! - to showcase your vision related research, in oral and poster formats. You may have done a vision related case study or audit, summer studentship, intercalated project, special study module work or PhD. Whatever the level, submit an abstract today!

Most importantly, Belfast Eye Conference is free of charge to attend. The event will be held virtually on Saturday 2nd July and Sunday 3rd July 2022.

FTSS National Conference – Saturday 23rd July 2022

The foundation trainees surgical societies have organised a national conference open to all medical students, junior doctors and core trainees aimed at providing an inspirational and informative event for those interested in a future surgical career. The main theme for this year’s conference is sustainability and the future of surgery. The conference builds on the success of last year’s virtual event, and the foundation trainees surgical society is immensely proud to organise an in person event this year, allowing for great networking opportunities, to meet fellow foundation trainees wishing to pursue surgical careers and hear about research and innovation from across the country in the surgical field. Keynote speakers will be announced in due course. There will be opportunities for poster presentations and abstract submissions during the conference.

Early Career Clinical Pharmacology Competition 2022

We have recently launched the 2022 Early Career Clinical Pharmacology Competition, hosted by the British Pharmacological Society.  The competition is open to medical and pharmacy students, doctors in training (up to and including IMT) and pharmacists (bands 5-7).

The aim of the competition is to encourage students and healthcare professionals to improve their knowledge and skills of pharmacology and safe and effective prescribing and to celebrate their valuable contributions to the field of clinical pharmacology.

To be eligible for the competition, applicants must have a poster accepted for presentation at our annual conference Pharmacology 2022.  Applicants must attend the conference to present their poster to the competition judges, who will decide the top posters in the undergraduate and postgraduate categories.

We welcome abstracts relating to:

  • Research projects linked to clinical pharmacology
  • Audit or quality improvement project on the use of medicines
  • Education abstracts on safe prescribing or use of medicines
  • Interesting case reports related to clinical pharmacology. Examples could include (but not limited to), adverse effects of medication, drug-drug interactions, polypharmacy, role of therapeutic drug monitoring and pharmacogenomics

Presenters of the best undergraduate and postgraduate posters will receive a £250 prize in a ceremony at Pharmacology 2022. They will also be invited to give a 5-minute presentation about their project at a subsequent national training event for clinical pharmacologists.

Pharmacology 2022 is held from 13 – 14 September 2022 in Liverpool. For further details, visit the Pharmacology 2022 event website.
